ASPCA SAFER® is a data driven assessment tool used to assess the potential of canine aggression. Since 1999, the ASPCA SAFER® Assessment has helped animal welfare professionals all over the country identify potential aggression and opportunities for behavior modification, ultimately leading to more adoptions through appropriate placement. ASPCA SAFER® is a program of the ASPCA, and was developed by Dr. Emily Weiss, C.A.A.B.
The Guide includes details on the research and development of the assessment and instructions on how to conduct and score the assessment. In addition it contains information on how to support the dogs in your care with identified behavior issues. Inside you'll find reproducible templates of the ASPCA SAFER® worksheet, behavior log, 7 adopter handouts detailing post-adoption training tips for dogs identified with behavioral challenges, and the ASPCA SAFER® certification checklist and submission form. A companion to the guide, the instructional video demonstrates all aspects of the program in an engaging and informative manner. Learn everything from the equipment and skills needed to conduct the assessment, common behaviors seen during the assessment via a visual glossary, how to conduct and score each assessment item, how to incorporate the assessment into your agency's decision making process, and an introduction to and examples of behavior modification and management programs/protocols.
